Martin O'Neill announces squad for crucial qualifiers at SSE Airtricity HQ
As official Energy Partner to the FAI, we were delighted to welcome Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill to our headquarters in Dublin today, to announce his provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Serbia.
The games against Georgia (2 September) and Serbia (5 September) are crucial fixtures in Ireland’s bid to secure a spot at next summer's FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The 39-man panel named by O’Neill includes a first senior call-up for former Cork City striker Sean Maguire. The 23-year-old, who remains the top scorer in the SSE Airtricity League due to his 20-goal haul before joining Preston North End in England, has previously been capped at underage level up to Under 21s.
Following the announcement, O’Neill told attending media that the two upcoming fixtures “will make ferocious inroads into the make-up of the group” and that “goal difference is pretty important too.” On Maguire’s call-up, he added: “I thought he was excellent against Dundalk. He is in the provisional squad. I hope he can get a chance.”
Sponsorship Manager, Anne McAreavey, said: “It was great to have Martin at our headquarters to announce his squad for the upcoming games. It’s fair to say there was huge excitement in our offices, especially from all of the passionate football fans here. It was also brilliant to hear a call-up for Sean Maguire, who has been such a star in the SSE Airtricity League. We wish Martin and the team all the best for the games ahead. Come on you boys in green!”
