National Volunteering Week 2017 - Do Good, Feel Good!

This week, SSE Ireland is delighted to be taking part in National Volunteering Week, organised by Volunteer Ireland.

This year’s National Volunteering Week is focusing on health and wellbeing, highlighting the positive impact volunteering can have on those that volunteer. With volunteer centres across the country hosting open days, the week provides a great opportunity for everyone to get involved and learn more about the benefits of volunteering.

At SSE, we’re hugely proud of the volunteering efforts of our colleagues. Through our Be the Difference programme, all SSE  employees get the chance to take time away from their usual work schedules to volunteer for a charity or community group of their choice.

In the last financial year, 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017, our colleagues volunteered around 5,500 working hours to causes close to their hearts - an increase of nearly 2,000 hours from the year before. Around 85% of SSE Ireland team members took a day out to volunteer last year, making a difference for 49 charities and community groups across the island of Ireland.

That achievement was in no small part thanks to our proud partnership with Make-A-Wish Ireland, which began last year. SSE Ireland team members volunteered a fantastic 455 working days to this extraordinary charity, helping to create magical experiences for children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses.

With our new financial year kicking off last month, what better way to start our volunteering activities, than with National Volunteering Week? SSE Ireland is encouraging everyone to take part and help worthy causes across Ireland, while reaping the benefits for your own health and wellbeing.

At SSE, we’re lucky to have the opportunity to help fantastic causes every year, and with so many of our colleagues taking part in our Be the Difference programme, we know well the benefits volunteering can bring for the organisation, the charity, and the individual.
