SSE Ireland contributed over €1.3m to good causes in 2016, reveals Business Impact Map
*Almost 5,500 working hours also volunteered for charities and community groups*
SSE Ireland contributed just over €1.3 million to charities and community groups in 2016, according to this year’s Business Impact Map from Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI).
The Business Impact Map showcases the financial contributions and volunteering hours of BITCI members to communities across the island of Ireland. SSE Ireland became a member in 2015, and this is the second year the company has participated in the Business Impact Map project.
SSE Ireland contributed around €1.18m in 'cash donations', representing 10% of the total amount donated by all businesses participating in this year’s Map. The company contributed a further €119,000 through ‘in-kind’ donations.
A large amount of SSE Ireland’s donations came through its Community Fund programme. The company makes annual contributions to community projects in the vicinity of its wind farms across the island of Ireland. Since 2005, SSE Ireland has presented over €6.6m to more than 2,600 local groups, including schools, sports clubs and community centres.
The Map also reveals that SSE Ireland employees volunteered a total of 5,449 working hours to charities and community groups last year, up nearly 2,000 hours from 2015. The company's Be the Difference programme gives every employee the opportunity to take a day away from their usual schedule and donate their time to a charity or community group of their choice. In addition to this, the programme includes a matched funding scheme, allowing volunteers to apply for funding from the company to boost their own fundraising efforts.
This 55% increase in volunteering is in part thanks to the company’s proud new partnership with Make-A-Wish Ireland. In the first year of the partnership, SSE Ireland contributed over €75,000 to the charity through a range of marketing campaigns, employee volunteering and wish-granting.
Anne Reynolds, SSE Ireland Community Development Officer, said: “We are extremely proud of the contribution we make to communities across the island of Ireland and the relationships we have established and grown with community members over the years. At SSE, we strive to make a difference to the communities in which we live and work, and we’re proud to share the positive impact that our community initiatives have had over the last year.”
