The SSE Airs and Marine Institute Singers present evening of choral favourites for COPE Galway

SSE Airtricity’s workplace choir, the SSE Airs, will join the National Workplace Choir of the Year, the Marine Institute Singers, and renowned tenor Owen Gilhooly for an evening of choral music in the Augustinian Church, Middle Street, Galway on Saturday 11 June.

The concert, entitled Midsummer Melodies, will feature well-known choral favourites as well as contemporary pieces.

The event is being held in aid of COPE Galway and all funds raised will go towards supporting their ongoing work helping homeless people in Galway City.

Last year, the SSE Airs won the Clef Club Award for Mixed Voice Choirs at the RDS Feis Ceoil in Dublin and the Opera Shield for Mixed Choirs at the AIMS Choral Festival in Wexford. The choir is composed of basses, tenors, altos and sopranos from across SSE Airtricity.

Formed in 2013, the Marine Institute Singers won the National Workplace Choir competition last September and have established a reputation as one of the freshest and most exciting sounding choirs to have emerged from Galway in recent years.

Ruaidhrí O’Dalaigh, the SSE Airs’ conductor, said: “We’re really looking forward to performing alongside the Marine Institute Singers for what promises to be a great night. The most important thing is that people come out and support this event and raise vital funding and awareness for the ongoing work of COPE Galway.”

Marine Institute Singers conductor, Carmel Dooley, added: “The Marine Institute Singers are very excited to welcome our friends in the SSE Airs to Galway for this joint concert. We are especially delighted to be joined by Owen Gilhooly, one of Ireland’s finest baritones for what promises to be an evening of wonderful music.”

The concert starts at 8pm on Saturday 11 June. Tickets are available at the door on the night, or from:
