SSE Airtricity named 3rd largest financial contributor in Business Impact Map

SSE Airtricity has been announced as the third largest financial contributor to charities and community groups in this year’s Business Impact Map, produced by Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI).

The map, which was released earlier this month, showcases the financial contributions and volunteering hours of BITCI members to communities across the island of Ireland. SSE Airtricity became a member in 2015, and this is the first year the company has participated in the Business Impact Map project.

The map shows that in 2015, SSE Airtricity donated more than €1 million to local projects and good causes, as well as volunteering over 3,500 hours.

BITCI is a non-profit organisation promoting corporate social responsibility. It is a trusted authority on responsible business practice, with a mission to maximise the positive impact of businesses on all stakeholders and society.

Its annual Business Impact Map captures statistics from 51 of Ireland’s largest companies. The overall statistics show that €27 million was donated in cash donations, in-kind donations and employee fundraising last year, while employees also volunteered over 213,000 hours to local groups and projects.

SSE Airtricity has a commitment to making a positive difference to the communities in which it operates. One major example of this is the SSE Airtricity Community Fund. SSE Airtricity makes annual contributions to community projects in the vicinity of its 25 wind farms on the island of Ireland. Since 2005, SSE Airtricity has presented over €5.5 million to more than 2,000 local groups, including schools, sports clubs and community centres.

The company also runs an employee volunteering scheme, called Be the Difference. The Be the Difference programme gives every SSE Airtricity employee the opportunity to take a day away from their usual schedule and donate their time to a charity or community group of their choice. In addition to this, the programme includes a matched funding scheme, allowing volunteers to apply for up to €300 from the company to boost their own fundraising efforts.

Anne Reynolds, SSE Airtricity Community Development Officer, said: “We are extremely proud to be listed in the top three financial contributors by Business in the Community Ireland in this year’s Business Impact Map. At SSE Airtricity, we strive to make a difference to the communities in which we live and work, and we’re proud to share the positive impact our community initiatives have had over the last year.”
