SSE Airs all set for Workplace Choir of the Year final

The SSE Airs, SSE Airtricity’s workplace choir, will be competing in the Workplace Choir of the Year final at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on Sunday 27 September.

Workplace Choir of the Year, which is operated by HM1 Arts in association with RTÉ Lyric FM, works with employers and organisations throughout Ireland to develop competition-standard choirs within the workplace and encourage employees to get involved.

On the night, the eight choirs who qualified from the semi-finals, which took place earlier this month, will battle it out for the prestigious title of Workplace Choir of the Year 2015.

The SSE Airs, which is composed of basses, tenors, altos and sopranos from across the company, struck a chord with the judges in the semi-finals with their ensemble performances of ‘Cantar’, a Spanish folk song by Jay Althouse, and ‘Wade in the Water’ by Willie Mae Thornton.

Choir organiser, Avril Hannin, said: “The choir has developed and improved so much over the last few years under the tutelage of our conductor, Ruaidhrí O Dálaigh. We’re very proud of our achievements so far and getting to the Workplace Choir of the Year final is right up there. It should be a brilliant evening and hopefully we’ll have plenty of friends, family and colleagues in the audience cheering us on. We’ll certainly be giving it everything we’ve got on the night!”

Earlier this year, the SSE Airs won the Clef Club Award for Mixed Voice Choirs at the RDS Feis Ceoil in Dublin and the Opera Shield for Mixed Choirs at the AIMS Choral Festival in Wexford.

The Workplace Choir of the Year final will take place in the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin at 7pm on Sunday 27 September. Tickets are available now at
