Records smashed at SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon 2015
Around 1,500 runners from across the globe converged on Derry~Londonderry for the third annual SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon on Sunday 31st May.
Thousands of spectators braved the windy conditions to see Kenya’s Freddy Sittuk defend his title in emphatic style, as he romped home with a three-minute victory margin and a new course record of 2:22:34.
There was also a new ladies record set, as Irish athlete and former Olympian, Pauline Curley, finished in 2:47:29, a full ten minutes quicker than the previous best time.
Prominent Derry~Londonderry runner, Greg Roberts, finished third overall in a time of 2:25:28.
The stunning 26.2 mile course took the runners through buzzing neighbourhoods and rural villages, along the banks of the River Foyle and over the city’s famous bridges, before finishing up in the historic Guildhall Square.
Donal Gormley, SSE Airtricity, said: “The Walled City Marathon was a roaring success for the third year running. It has become an early highlight of summer in the city. Despite the mixed conditions on the day, there was a great atmosphere, and I want to commend the enthusiasm of the volunteers and entertainers, and congratulate all the athletes who took part.”
