SSE Ireland ranked in Top 5 for community support

SSE Ireland has been ranked in the Top Five of Irish companies providing financial support to voluntary and community organisations in Ireland.

Our continued leadership in community support has been revealed in the latest Business Impact Map published by Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI). This map, which has just been launched, analyses the level of engagement from BITCI member businesses in 2017 with local communities, both through financial contributions and volunteering hours. This is the second time in three years that SSE Ireland has been ranked in the Top Five.

According to the latest Business Impact Map, SSE Ireland contributed €1.2 million in 2017 to Irish charities and community groups from its wind farm Community Funds, education scholarships, in-kind donations and employee fundraising. In addition, SSE Ireland employees volunteered 3,675 hours to worthy causes, creating over 300 community connections.

The large amount contributed through SSE Airtricity’s Community Funds is through annual contributions made to community projects being promoted by local groups operating in the vicinity of the company’s wind farms. Since 2005, the SSE Airtricity Community Fund has presented over €6.5m to more than 2,600 local groups, including schools, sports clubs and community centres.

In volunteering, the company's Be the Difference programme gives every employee the opportunity to take a day away from their usual schedule and donate their time to a charity or community group of their choice. In addition to this, the programme includes a matched funding scheme, allowing volunteers to apply for funding from the company to boost their own fundraising efforts.

This year fundraising contributions from SSE Ireland employees totalled €23,976, up almost 30 per cent on the €18,591 raised in 2016.

Mia McCarthy Head of Sustainability at SSE Ireland, commented:

“SSE Ireland is proud to be ranked once again ranked in the Top Five of companies financial supporting Irish voluntary and community organisations. The annual Business Impact Map is a hugely valuable initiative from Business in the Community Ireland that helps to communicate and showcase what member companies are doing for their local communities.

“We’re delighted to be recognised in this way alongside other leading business organisations. This reaffirms the commitment that we always make to providing support to communities through direct and in-kind financial contributions as well as our corporate support for staff volunteering and fundraising. In all these ways, our company and our employees are proudly making a difference to promote and support the sustainability of communities in which we operate throughout Ireland.”

At a national level, BITCI reported that €12 million was donated by Irish companies and employees in 2017, with employee volunteering hours up on last year at 231,668 hours being provided to valuable activities.

SSE Ireland has been a member of BITCI since 2015 and has participated annually in the Map for the past three years. The 2017 Business Impact Map can be viewed here.
