5,000 brave tough conditions for SSE Airtricity Frank Duffy 10 Mile
Freddy Sittuk of Raheny Shamrock AC put in a strong performance, in tough conditions, to claim victory in the SSE Airtricity Frank Duffy 10 Mile on Sunday 21 August.
Despite relentless wind and rain, over 5,000 runners lined up in Phoenix Park for the race, which was the third event in the 2016 SSE Airtricity Dublin Race Series.
Sittuk finished the course in 52:37, just one second ahead of his Raheny Shamrock AC teammate Mark Kirwan, after an exciting sprint finish. Scottish athlete Michael Cawley took third in 53:30.
In the women’s contest, Gladys Ganiel from Belfast took her second SSE Airtricity Race Series win of the year in 59:04. Dublin’s Catriona McKiernan secured her third silver medal of the series with a time of 59:15, while England-based Proctor Bryony took bronze in 59:41.
After the race, Sittuk commented: “The weather was so brutal, it made it really tough. But my target is the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon and it could be like this on the day. I’m looking for a win, so this is perfect training for the big day.”
Ganiel said the race was all about strategy, rather than just looking for a fast time. She said: “The conditions were a bit extreme, so I positioned myself to stay with the lead girls who went out pretty quick. I was just aware of what the main threats were doing and responded to be in a position to challenge. I was very happy to take the win in the end.”
For those looking to claim one of the newly allotted 2,000 spaces in the 2016 SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon, a waiting list has been created to allocate the additional entries. Priority will go to those who have competed in the 2016 SSE Airtricity Race Series. Applicants who are successful in securing a spot will be notified on 31 August 2016. Registration for the waiting list can be found at http://sseairtricitydublinmarathon.ie/contact-us/
The next opportunity to take part in the 2016 SSE Airtricity Race Series will be the SSE Airtricity Dublin Half Marathon, which takes place in Phoenix Park on Saturday 24 September. Registration closes 9 September.
