Blue Riband day for SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions as new Dublin HQ opens
It’s a Blue Riband day for SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions as the Managing Director of SSE Enterprise, Jim McPhillimy, joins team members to officially open the company’s new Dublin Headquarters and main Area Depot at Red Cow Business Park, Dublin 22.
The opening of the new facility marks yet another landmark for SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions, Ireland’s largest street lighting contractor. Last year the company, which celebrated its fifth anniversary in December, secured a 5 year contract with Fingal County Council to maintain all 31,000 public lights in the county – one of the biggest such contract wins for SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions – while its exemplary safety performance saw the company become the first and only street lighting contractor in Ireland to receive OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditation and certification for its Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
The company’s new Dublin Headquarters and main Area Depot will help serve the new contract for Fingal County Council as well as other contracts in Greater Dublin and future growth plans for the business in the region. Around 30 staff including lighting engineers and administrative support functions will be based at the new Dublin Headquarters and Area Depot. Nationwide SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions employs 115 staff providing a full range of project management, consultancy, design, installation and maintenance solutions for local authority, sports lighting and commercial customers.
SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions is part of SSE Enterprise, a business newly established by SSE plc that brings together four of SSE’s businesses across Great Britain and Ireland – Contracting, Lighting, Utilities and Telecoms – employing around 3,500 staff to provide customers with industry leading business to business essential services.
Jim McPhillimy, SSE’s Managing Director, Enterprise, said:
“I’m delighted to join my colleagues today to officially open the new Dublin Headquarters and main Area Depot for SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions. Although it’s often taken for granted, we know that effective public lighting is a critical service, providing a wide range of benefits to residents, road users and the environment. That’s why there is an immense pride across every member of the team here in Ireland in the work that each is doing daily to ensure we operate, maintain and repair public lighting to the very highest operational and safety standards, and in doing so making a real difference to local communities.”
Gerry Burke, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions, said:
“The opening of our new Dublin Headquarters and main Area Depot provides us with an ideal base from which we can continue to sustainably grow the SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions business here in line with our exemplary safety practices. As an integral part of SSE’s new Enterprise business and as Ireland’s largest and fastest-growing street lighting contractor, we have ambitious plans to capitalise on our success to date in Ireland and to further grow our business while always maintaining a clear focus on safety, listening to customers, managing performance and working efficiently.”
The addition of the Fingal public lighting contract to the company’s lighting portfolio brings to around 285,000 lights nationwide that SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions now maintains on behalf of 26 Local Authorities, the largest lighting maintenance portfolio so far in the company’s five year history, and representing around 65 per cent of all local authority public lighting in Ireland. The Fingal County contract win represents a 60 per cent increase in the number of lights maintained by the company in the Greater Dublin area and will see the company maintain lights in urban, suburban and rural communities spanning a geographical area of 450 sq km and covering key national and regional infrastructure elements including Dublin Airport.
In addition to being the only street lighting company in Ireland to be recommended for the OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditation and certification for its Occupational Health and Safety Management System, SSE Airtricity Utility Solutions enjoys a unique record of having had no reportable incidents or accidents across a workforce of 115 people – a record that stretches back over 1,850 days.
