SSE Airtricity backs new Energy Engage Code

SSE Airtricity joined with Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte TD and other energy utilities today to launch a new voluntary code that aims to keep domestic customers connected to their energy supply.

The Energy Engage Code comes into effect on June 1 2014 and sets out a programme of measures that Irish Energy Suppliers will take to encourage customers in arrears and at risk of disconnection to engage with them to ensure that they remain connected to their energy supply.

The Energy Engage Code was launched today by Pat Rabbitte TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, along with Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, and Tom McSweeney, National Vice Chair, Saint Vincent de Paul. The launch was also attended by Owen Wilson, Chief Executive, Electricity Association of Ireland (EAI) as well as representatives of other participating Energy Supply companies.

The Energy Engage Code is a coordinated industry-led approach to further assisting customers in arrears and at risk of disconnection. The key principle underpinning the Code is a firm commitment by Suppliers that they will never disconnect an engaging customer.

Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, comments:

“At SSE Airtricity our focus is not just on delivering greener, lower cost energy. We recognise that from time to time customers can experience difficulty in paying their bills. That’s why at SSE Airtricity our team is always available to help and advise customers, particularly those experiencing difficulty with their bills. We have led the energy industry in assisting customers in arrears and at risk of disconnection and as a result we saw a 42% reduction in disconnections in 2013 on the previous year.

“However we also recognise the real benefit that working together as an industry can bring to maintaining energy supply for customers in difficulty. With our experience in doing more to help SSE Airtricity customers, I was very happy to work alongside Minister Rabbitte and other Energy Suppliers to develop a Code that will ensure that all energy suppliers are providing the same level of assistance to customers experiencing difficulty.

“This Code sets the standard for all Suppliers. And fundamentally the Code establishes the key principle and a firm commitment by Suppliers that we will never disconnect an engaging customer. That’s why at SSE Airtricity we are proud to have played our part to help bring forward this important Code that will help customers manage their energy costs and remain connected to their energy supply.”
